The 2009 Handbook of Application Delivery
A Guide to Decision Making in Challenging Economic Times by Dr. Jim Metzler
Excerpt: (Get Instant Access to the full Application Delivery Handbook below)
Over the last few years application delivery has become a priority for virtually all IT organizations. However, while many IT organizations have become better at application delivery, the majority of IT organizations struggle with this highly complex task. One of the primary goals of this handbook is to help IT organizations become better with application delivery. One of the ways that the handbook achieves that goal is by creating a framework that IT organizations can customize for use in their environment. The four primary components of the framework are:
- Planning
- Network and Application Optimization
- Management
- Control
In 2009, the economy is politely referred to as being challenging. While this challenging economic environment will certainly put pressure on IT budgets, IT organizations need to continue to invest in application delivery solutions. That follows in large part because IT organizations have made, and continue to make, significant investments in enterprise applications to support key business processes. IT organizations need to protect these investments, and the business processes that they enable, by ensuring that these applications can be effectively delivered.

Packet Design, Inc., develops and markets network solutions that leverage the distributed intelligence of the Internet Protocol (IP) to enhance the reliability, efficiency and predictability of IP networks. Our unique IP routing and traffic analysis solutions enable unprecedented visibility, analysis and diagnosis of an enterprise or service provider’s IP network, improving network availability and performance while reducing operating costs and delivering a strong ROI.
Packet Design, Inc., was spun out in March 2003 from Packet Design, LLC, the fourth networking startup of entrepreneurs Judy Estrin and Bill Carrico. The Estrin-Carrico team had previously founded Bridge Communications, Network Computing Devices and Precept Software; and Estrin served as chief technology officer at Cisco Systems from 1998 to 2000. Packet Design, Inc., has raised $24 million in private funding from Advanced Technology Ventures, Mayfield Fund, Allegis Capital, Masthead Venture Partners and parent company Packet Design, LLC.
Route Explorer™ and Traffic Explorer
Route Explorer™ is a network appliance that for the first time lets network engineers look into their IP network “cloud” to gather, display and analyze routing path information, both in real-time and historically. This enables network engineers to verify, monitor and optimize network operations as well as detect, diagnose and resolve IP layer problems faster than has been possible till now. Route Explorer’s unique capabilities enable IT organizations to achieve network engineering excellence for today’s mission critical IP networks.
Traffic Explorer provides network-wide, routing-aware traffic analysis, monitoring and modeling on the as-running network with full historical replay and trend analysis.. Traffic Explorer enables network managers to more intelligently utilize network assets, streamline network operations, and perform more effective top-down monitoring and troubleshooting.
